Group 5 will be investigating wikis and "what it's all about". There are many types of wikis and there seems to be a variety of ways that one could be used to collaborate. We will begin by putting together a website from a wiki. As we each add our own touch by adding a personalized page we will explore such things as threadmode, tracking projects, speciality wikis for things like data collection, and integrating wikis with blogs among other things. We will also provide some links to how wikis can be used in education and to how they are used in education. Are there times you should use a wiki and are there times when you should not use a wiki? Are there different types of wikis? Can wikis and blogs be integrated? We will attempt to provide some answers and/or guidelines to questions such as these as we attempt to offer information to the many teachers who are interested in increasing the use of technology in their classrooms. Taking a look at the student's side of things we will look at the age levels that particular uses of wikis might be more appropriate for with some possibilities for content use. We will also explore the different contextual uses that would most accommodate the use of a wiki and prepare a variety of potential options.
In summary, our SIG focus for the teacher, one of the four common places in education, is to provide the links and resources that will provide educators the necessary information to confidently use wikis in their workplaces and thereby provide them with another tool in their teaching profession. The focus for the student will be regarding the appropriateness, the content use, and some options available to them. We, as individual members of a this group will not have a special area of emphasis. We will research wikis and what they are all about, though in the end we may be each led to a particular area of emphasis that is of interest to each of us individually. The major categories of resources we hope to gather related to our SIG project are the definition of a wiki, the various types of wikis, how they can be used in education, and the related links answering these question.
